I once had a problem with a fic that I was submitting for a fanzine, because I was told it was too schmoopy. Thing is, while the lead in the fandom (Donald Strachey) is anything but schmoopy, his partner (Timothy Callahan) - in canon - is the absolute schmoopiest. So I had to show that while Timothy was indeed schmoopy, Donald was right in character.

But I do absolutely get what you mean. I personally nope out when someone overuses the term "lover" too much in dialogue. Once every 10,000 words is fine. But, at least in The Sentinel fandom, when it got to be every other paragraph, I barfed out.
