Maze Runner: The Death Cure

Went on a movie date with my sister to watch the last Maze Runner film. I always appreciate the way films can bring people together and give us a reason to hang out. PLUS we get to have some great fan discussions. ANYWAY, let me tell y'all about my boi.

I love a good zombie apocalypse story with intriguing/sexy characters just as much as the next girl, and this film was super fun. Much better than the first two. I almost feel guilty about it considering Dylan O'Brien had to get his face mangled to finish these films, but this one was so well put together. Very long, but so many epic moments. I really thought O'Brien knocked it out of the park. So much more character development than in the books. My big qualms are with the way the "cure" was actually found to magically exist in Thomas' blood, and how apparently Thomas could have saved Newt and did save Brenda??? That was not in the book and was frankly, out of place. The whole point of Newt's character was to show that the virus was unforgiving and all-consuming once you contracted it.

As for my favorite parts:
1) The opening sequence is at the top of my list! I'm a sucker for an intricate and well-executed plan. Plus, it was gut-wrenching when they revealed that Minho wasn't in that crate. They should have renamed this movie - THE HUNT FOR MINHO. I just adored how it was all hands on deck the entire film to get Minho back. The focus was carried on through-out the film until the whole weird Tereza distraction. In the book it was very clear that there was no going back from her betrayal, and yet in the movie they threw in a kiss for good measure. HOWEVER, I can't complain about that epic jawline shot during the kiss. *fans self*

2) The Thomas x Minho! I know I'm in the minority here but the single-mindedness of Thomas throughout the film, to get him back no matter what, just totally stole my heart. I already shipped them in the books anyway, but the actor that plays Minho just really brought Minho to life for me and kicked ass in so many ways. He never backs down, and his only soft moments are the ones with Thomas. The stare at the end, and the hug! Be still my heart.

3) The Thomas x Minho X Newt was also hella strong. The three-way reuniting hug in WCKD, GAH. I like how, in the film, Minho ran (again) through the city to try and save Newt - nice throwback to the first movie. And then he got to at least mourn for Newt because he was there in the immediate aftermath, which wasn't in the books.

4) Galley!! He was sassy and smart and everything I wanted. And he never really apologized for losing his mind, which I appreciated. WCKD did that to him on purpose, and any one of them could have ended up the way he did. What was amazing was his ability to pick himself up again.

5) The aesthetic!! Those fixed-up trucks, that scary messed-up ship that brought them to their island refuge, the stolen Berg, the awesome apocalypse outfits. Dylan and that hot AF gun sling. Cool shit.

6) How many times people said 'shit'! Definitely fitting every time, but also hilarious.

7) That memorial rock at the end totally got to me. I didn't even cry until that point.
