What I'm Watching

We finished Only Murders in the Building season four. It wasn't my favorite season because it got VERY meta about being an actor. But I liked how they tied everything together in the last episode. All the best friend vibes were very cute, too.

Captain America: Brave New World: I really liked how Sam and Torres worked together, and I really liked the whole lead-up to the White House meeting scene (the three of them in the limo!!) and the shoot-out. The green super computer villain was very creepy, too.

The Japanese fighter jet fight with Sam and Torres up in the air, and then Sam throwing the shield at a nuke? I thought that part was very cringe :/ But then that lead to Torres falling, and then the whole scene in the hospital! Long live Bucky/Sam!!! Bucky compliments Sam on how he looked in the air, comforts him, then gives a very inspiring speech, then says I LOVE YOU BUDDY, and then HUGS him! HEART EYES EVERYWHERE.

I also appreciated the President hulking out and destroying DC - the metaphor was slapping us in the face but I'm not complaining.

One question though... why is Bucky running for Congress??

Overall it was fun and Sam's characterization was great but I wish the MCU would rely less on special effects and more on a tight plot. Alas, I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. At least my ship is alive and well ♥

Eastern Promises: I watched this movie because I saw someone talking about it on tumblr. It is indeed very violent and very homoerotic. The twist was handled so well!

Doctor Odyssey!! This show is so fun - it's hitting so many of my buttons. It's got the 'case of the week' vibe because it's created by Ryan Murphy of 9-1-1 fame. The cruise ship setting is pretty and also lets the characters spend so much time with each other. Most of the quirky minor characters have been really interesting, and COVID is an integral part of one of the characters' backstories (as opposed to being ignored, which I despise in shows set in the modern day). Plus the three leads have great chemistry and are turning into the throuple of my dreams.

We started watching Common Side Effects because it was created by Joseph Bennett - the same guy who created Scavengers Reign - and Steve Hely. It's trippy and engrossing - I can't wait to find out more about the conspiracy at the heart of the show.

What shows/movies have you seen lately?

Also, I have time for some Japanese practice this week:

Clearing out my WIPs - I'm hoping to transition away from google docs but I haven't tried any alternatives yet. Any suggestions?

A Shyan spooky season WIP that I'm saving for later:
Mothman sends a mysterious package??

It’s shame that keeps Ryan from telling Shane about the mysterious box he got in the mail. Even though it’s all he can think about, the image of what lay inside burned into his brain. He’s got to tell someone. He can’t not talk about it. He’s almost ready to just yell it out in the middle of the office.

But the same refrain keeps playing over and over in his head. He shouldn’t have opened it. He should NOT have opened it. When the nondescript and unassuming package was delivered to Ryan’s door with no return address, the curiosity was nearly overwhelming. The rational part of his brain, the part that said he did not want to know, was overruled.

He’d carefully unwrapped the brown packaging, and then he’d sliced open the tape across the top of the box with a kitchen knife. Everything looked pretty normal up to that point. He hadn’t hesitated before he’d pulled open the flaps.

There, nestled in the middle of tissue paper and bubble wrap, was an actual human finger. There was blood staining the tissue, and it had the horrible stench of dead flesh. It was slightly swollen with a purple tinge, bloated from decay.

Ryan doesn’t remember much after that. He’s pretty sure he threw the whole thing into the trash, acting on auto pilot.

He wants to assume it’s somebody’s idea of a Halloween prank. Except he doesn’t think that’s actually true.

Someone sent it to him on purpose.

It feels like a threat.

And prompts from the No True Pair round that I haven't started:
March Twenty-Ninth - 2 takes 4 to a theme park [Tashi takes Lily]
March Thirty-First - 3 & 4 are traveling together to [destination] - Patrick and Lily are traveling to the hospital ??

I hope you like it!

I'm still learning some of the mechanisms. The biggest one we've (me, my co-writer, and our two beta readers) have learned is that we should only have one Draft at a time to make edits in. Otherwise, merging the edits with the original copy is pretty nightmarish.

I have separate docs for each project.

Within each project, you’ll have the main doc. Then, you can make Drafts of that doc that other people can modify. You can also type right into them.

But, if you Merge that Draft with the main doc, it’s really easy to lose information.

The situation I ran into was that my co-writer and my betas each created their own Drafts to make comments in, and then that turned into a nightmare of trying to integrate four sets of changes (including the ones I’d made to the main doc while continuing to write.)

If you’re not working with multiple reviewers like that and aren’t worried about merging changes, using Drafts for chapters could work very well.

I haven't seen the new Cap movie, but I'm very heart-eyes over the Bucky/Sam content that I've been spoilered for! :D :D :D I'm glad to read your review, and to hear that Sam got a decent movie, yay.

It definitely played well in a semi-full theater when it was new, but the screening last week was clearly full of people who had seen it multiple times before and were laughing at little details. On the way out, I heard one woman explaining to her friend, "Because they were in love. IN. LOVE" and then like four separate groups of 4-8 fangirls (gender-neutral but the audience was definitely heavily skewed toward female-presenting) gathered together excitedly.

Season 3 of Hacks was kind of up and down but it ended up in a spot that definitely makes me eager for what's happening next.

I honestly have not loved the new season of Hacks so far but I am going to enjoy that cast no matter what so I carry on!

I haven't seen BNW yet but it's great to hear that it was fun and Sam's characterization was good! Also I totally got spoiled for the Sam/Bucky scene and it sounds delightful. I was a little "???" about Bucky being in Congress but sure, why not lol :D

I missed Cap in the cinema but will watch it as soon as it hits Disney+. Based on your review, I think I'll like it!
