We finished Only Murders in the Building season four. It wasn't my favorite season because it got VERY meta about being an actor. But I liked how they tied everything together in the last episode. All the best friend vibes were very cute, too.

Captain America: Brave New World: SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE )

Eastern Promises: I watched this movie because I saw someone talking about it on tumblr. It is indeed very violent and very homoerotic. The twist was handled so well!

Doctor Odyssey!! This show is so fun - it's hitting so many of my buttons. It's got the 'case of the week' vibe because it's created by Ryan Murphy of 9-1-1 fame. The cruise ship setting is pretty and also lets the characters spend so much time with each other. Most of the quirky minor characters have been really interesting, and COVID is an integral part of one of the characters' backstories (as opposed to being ignored, which I despise in shows set in the modern day). Plus the three leads have great chemistry and are turning into the throuple of my dreams.

We started watching Common Side Effects because it was created by Joseph Bennett - the same guy who created Scavengers Reign - and Steve Hely. It's trippy and engrossing - I can't wait to find out more about the conspiracy at the heart of the show.

What shows/movies have you seen lately?

Also, I have time for some Japanese practice this week: Some Japanese phrases under the cut. )

Clearing out my WIPs - I'm hoping to transition away from google docs but I haven't tried any alternatives yet. Any suggestions?

A Shyan spooky season WIP that I'm saving for later: under here. )

And prompts from the No True Pair round that I haven't started:
March Twenty-Ninth - 2 takes 4 to a theme park [Tashi takes Lily]
March Thirty-First - 3 & 4 are traveling together to [destination] - Patrick and Lily are traveling to the hospital ??

At this point I'm collecting bingo cards even though I haven't completed one in a while :P But I love my [community profile] lyricaltitles September Bingo card!

Also got a card for the H/C themed bingo at the sweetspicy bingo tumblr. The event ended already but these are still awesome prompts so I'm saving them here.

September is also the month for [community profile] no_true_pair posting! As always, the prompts are super fun. I really want to finish my fic about the Sallie House Demon this year (started it after Buzzfeed Unsolved ended), so hopefully I can at least manage that.

[community profile] ficinabox noms are open. I'm worried about having time, but every year it's my favorite exchange besides [community profile] trickortreatex. I'll see how noms go.

Redemption for Sins I Can't Mention!! I got to participate in the Shyan big bang, and I got to finish an RPF fic that I've been thinking about for a long time involving demon!Shane going to hell to rescue Ryan. It happens to be the longest fic I wrote last year, and it very specifically caters to my interests, lol.

It's no surprise that my Merthur canon divergent AU dominated my stats. I felt good about that fic but I'm excited that some of my other ships showed up on my top five lists too.

I have saved a few workskins on AO3 and used them for various works. None of these are my own, just adaptations of the work of others. It's fun to do "unconventional" fic and add in different things. This post is a way to collect all of the various sources for the workskins and the instructions.

Bergara and Madej Investigations, Inc.: My first attempt, with different fonts

Pied Piper Gets the Hollywood Treatment (supposedly): I used text boxes to make it look like a comic, also added in a news article and a reddit post

Code for the article:

Code for the Reddit post:

The Fate of the Underworld's New Hellhound: Incorporated a letter and a mission report

The letter coding is easy: < div class= "letter" >text here, take out spaces </ div >

The code for the mission report:

The New York Institute's Shadowhunter-in-Training: News Article

I still haven't been able to get text messaging code to work, so maybe that will be my next project.

Happy New Year! I hope this year is kind to you :)

The new year is an opportunity to go through my house and get things in order. It's also an opportunity to go through my google docs and try to get my ideas in order.

Fic Goals this year:
-Heavy Artillery Holiday Exchange
-Fandom Trumps Hate, Sam/Bucky (MCU) Fic
-Arthur/Gwaine (Merlin BBC) fic that I've been messing with for two years. It might be a good one for wipBB or Iddy Iddy BB.
-[community profile] cap_ironman remix
-[personal profile] candyheartsex
-[community profile] heavyartillery events
-All the Halloween fic!!
-Hopefully [community profile] littleblackdressex and [community profile] smut4smut run again
-Battleship!!
-[community profile] ficinabox
-Bulletproof Exchange
-Maybe the sequel to that Theo/Liam Country fic I wrote called You're Worth the Drive (Basically I wanted Liam's dad to be an ass and for Theo to be all protective, and then I wanted the rest of the pack to find out about them)
-Part III of my Merthur AU

I've been sitting on three Sam/Bucky (MCU) fic ideas that I probably will never end up writing but I'm recording them here so I can delete the google doc. If you know of a fic that already exists that kind of fits, please do point me in that direction :)

01. Another madripoor fic, only this time Sam gets kidnapped after Zemo ditches them. The bad guys use mind games with Sam and make him relieve memories that will be useful to them in order to find his weakness(es). It definitely comes up that he’s always had a thing for Bucky, some kind of middle school project maybe? The only way I see this working is if Bucky is also kidnapped too (because he'd go crazy trying to get Sam free and succeed before the bad guys get too deep). So Zemo or Sharon would have to break them out. Sam doesn’t have to tell Bucky everything, but he does have to talk about it eventually. Maybe the bad guys would try to exploit their relationship while in captivity and torture Bucky or torture an impersonator? Then feelings/getting together at the end.

02. Sam survives the snap. He's the one working with the team to do the time travel thing. Sam would want to get Bucky back; very angsty during those long years alone. Sam’s there when the compound gets bombed. Bucky shows up at the final battle in Endgame and he and Sam have a battlefield reunion?

03. This prompt from FFA: An AU fic where Steve gets snapped, Sam and Bucky don't, and they slowly fall in love while holding each other together in the aftermath. It's unbearably romantic, with lots of emphasis on learning to be happy again and how genuinely good for each other they are.

... And then they end up on Vormir.

I would want them to get their happy ending. Maybe they can sacrifice something with intense meaning for both of them, something that they both love but that isn't actually a person. I am thinking of the shield here.

A tiny little ficlet I started for this prompt a while ago )

And here are some random prompts I saved that I might revisit:

Any Fandom | Any Pairing | who did you kill?
Any Fandom | Any Pairing | why are you covered in blood?
any, any, taking a walk in an old cemetery
Roaring fire
Getting drenched in the rain
Any Characters/Pairings | Just pull the car over!
Any Fandom / Any Pairing / They just wanted free champagne and maybe a dessert when they fake proposed in a filled restaurant. Just some harmless fun. What they didn’t realize was that not everyone in this restaurant was a stranger. And that some people would want answers.

I participated in the [community profile] fffc Fandom Battle to celebrate the comm's 10 year anniversary, and I was proud of my productivity! The weekly posting schedule kept me motivated. I finished with 489 points, which put me in seventh place.

Here's my tag.

I got into two new fandoms because of the battle. When it started, The Umbrella Academy was the only fandom I recognized so I binged the rest of s1 and 2. I wrote my first Umbrella Academy fic about Leonard even though he's definitely not my favorite character. I also got into Cobra Kai, even though I'm not quite caught up. WOW the tropes! The action! The heartwarming moments! The comedy! Amazing.

I also got around to watching Pacific Rim: Uprising, which was a fun ride. I liked it better than I expected, but the first is still such a classic.

I learned how to use pixl and made icons and headers and fanmix covers. I haven't made fanart in years so that was a fun experiment. I also made fanmixes for Teen Wolf, Julie and the Phantoms, and Pacific Rim.

I finished two Band of Brothers fics: a webgott piece and a crack Stephen Ambrose piece. I also started a Batman/Superman fic that seemed so ridiculously tropey that I abandoned it. I wrote meta for Teen Wolf and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

As for my Julie and the Phantoms fic, hopefully I will finish/edit it sometime soon and actually post on AO3.

I got to write fic based on hollyandvice's fanvid for the Cap_Ironman Reverse Big Bang this year. The vid focuses on the angst between Steve and Tony during endgame, with an open ending. I really like the intensity of it. The fic premise is basically: Steve gets Thor to use the infinity stones and give him a redo in order to save Tony, and Tony makes a different decision about the direction his life should go.

I was selected to write for the upcoming Teen Wolf Horror 'zine This Might Hurt! I really need to wrap up my fic for that. This will be the very first 'zine I'm participating in, which is sort of crazy because zones were an early fandom thing? Seems like they are possibly making a comeback. I was not selected for a new Sam/Bucky zine, which I'm disappointed about - but I also know there are a lot of talented MCU writers out there.

I'm helping at the sunshine challenge this year, and I'm super excited about our Greek mythology prompts! Especially relevant because I'm playing Hades right now.

I couldn't really think of any off the top of my head, so I've collected links of resources I found reading through the comments of others at Snowflake!

Netlifx has an online gallery of costumes from The Crown and Queen's Gambit. It's very pretty, but there is a lot of clicking that you have to do.

Dramacool looks like a good place to watch Asian dramas.

Someone put together a great post with paranormal research links. I'll have to check out these academic webpages next time I want to write a cryptid or ghost story.

Stark Tower's floor plan in the MCU

A dictionary of names!

What America Ate - a website about American food during the great depression. And it's so pretty!

What's On the Menu - a real menu archive.

This post about writing resources seems really helpful.

**Minotaur's Sex Tips for Slash Writers, maintained by Squidge. Definitely NSFW but I can't believe I didn't know about this before!

For Video Games Specifically:
Before I Play wiki that lists things you should know about different games. I wish I had known about this sooner!

How Long To Beat gives me a comparison point to guess how much game playing I might do on a game. Useful to me right now, as I try to figure out if I'm going to start a new game.

[community profile] fandomtrumpshate auction offerings are now open for viewing! This year, I would ideally like to find someone to brit-pick for a Merlin RPF challenge that I signed up for. It would also be great if I could find a beta or two (for MCU or Merlin). And I'll be browsing the art tag, both because I love to bid on art and I love to find new artists to follow. This year I celebrated my 10th year on AO3! And I wrote and posted:
52 stories in 15 fandoms.

Total wordcount: 168,716

More on my writing this year )

1. Your main fandom of the year?
Merlin, mostly because I fell in love with the show this year and then jumped into fandom events and longfic reading.

2. Your favourite film you watched this year?
God's Own Country. The Conjuring 2.

3. Your favourite book read this year?
I only finished 12 books this year, but the Dark is the Night mlm series was the most memorable.

4. Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
Easier by 5 Seconds of Summer

5. Your favourite TV show of the year?
Merlin ♥

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
So many amazing Merlin writers like astolat, marguerite_26, malu_3, skitz_phenom, and schweet_heart. Also, The Change Trilogy changed my life. Best longfic I've ever read.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Band of Brothers fandom was angsty this year, and it was hard to watch the demise of the easyco comm. But like a phoenix, the fandom is back in a big way.

8. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
Bradley James. I even listened to a European football podcast & learned about a sport I used to despise for this man.

9. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Natasha Romanoff (as in the character, not the actress). Maybe because Endgame really wrecked my heart, but I've been super into reading and writing her POV.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
JONAS BROTHERS ARE BACK, BABY.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Generation Kill. I know that there is space for GK in new HBO war fandoms, but this year I've been missing the big Generation Kill holiday exchange and the old GK kink meme.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Lucifer fandom is probably a fun place to be, so maybe I'll get caught up and then dip my toes in.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Mulan. Wonder Woman 1984. Black Widow.
impala_chick: (Default)
Stolen from a couple of people. Goodbye 2018!

1. Your main fandom of the year?
Marvel Cinematic Universe. And Teen Wolf (even a year after it ended!)

2. Your favorite film you watched this year?
Maze Runner: The Death Cure. Yay, an action packed blockbuster with my aesthetic! I thought they made a lot of great additions to book canon and O'Brien was quite impressive (and hot, dayum).

3. Your favorite book read this year?
Song of Achilles or City of Heavenly Fire because I'm a sucker for a tragic romance, apparently.

4. Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
5 Seconds of Summer's Youngblood Album - got to go to their concert this year and had a great time. I didn't spend that much time searching for new music this year as I normally do, though. Monster Among Men is my favorite.

5. Your favorite TV show of the year?
Letterkenny! I discovered it this year, and I can't even believe how funny, witty, sarcastic, and socially conscious it is. And now it's all on Hulu!

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Shadowhunters! Although Letterkenny is a close second, it's not as active as Shadowhunters. SH has a pretty big fanbase and super talented fanartists. I do wish there were more fic exchanges/challenges/diverse writing though.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Shadowhunters getting canceled :/ Also, some parts of Infinity War. That plot was all over the place.

8. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?

9. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Tony pulling out the flip phone in Infinity War (but then not dialing??? Torture). Also, watching Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural and seeing the boys share. a. bed. Tropes in real life - count me in. Also, Shane Madej talking to demons gave me life.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Smallville. I started a rewatch and even wrote a Clex fic, but then the news broke about Allison Mack and I felt bad about the whole fandom :/ I may continue my rewatch, because boy do I still adore Welling's Clark and Rosey's Lex.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Well, not sure really. Maybe All American because of Cody Christian, although I don't really want another teen drama in my life. I definitely want to watch all of the movies in The Conjuring franchise, because I watched the first one this year and loved it.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Shadowhunters 3B and Avengers: Endgame.

Congratulations to everyone who participated this year! This was my first year participating/keeping track of my writing. Even though I focused on fandom words instead of original fiction, I'm glad that I participated. I learned a lot about myself as a writer and I reached 15,130 words.

↠I used to get really hung up on knowing exactly where I wanted the fic to end. I wouldn't sit down and write if I didn't have an end goal in mind already. But to keep my word count going, I let myself explore scenarios without being so strict about ending at a certain point. Doing that freed me up and actually made it more fun to write.

↠Along the same lines, I always tried to write scenes in order. But I realized that I could write the part that was inspiring me at the moment, and go back and re-order things. Encouraging my word count meant just writing the scene that was actually working for me when I had time to write. I can always edit my stuff later!

↠Beginnings are still hard, but I saw some advice somewhere about starting "in the middle," so to speak. Get to the point, and it's okay to do world building along the way or give more explanation later on. I liked that advice.

↠I also used to think that I had to clear my whole day in order to have time to write productively. But for NaNoWriMo, I encouraged myself to write even if I only had an hour or two. It turns out I can crank out a fair amount in that amount of time, and even if I have to stop in the middle of a scene, I will actually be able to remember what I wanted to write later on (for the most part).

Tenses

Dec. 4th, 2017 07:11 pm
impala_chick: (Default)
+Do you prefer to read/write fic in a certain verb tense? When I first started writing, present tense was a big no-no but now there are many fics written in present tense and I kind of like them. They seem to be easier/faster to read. Maybe it only works well when it's all one person's POV, like a stream of consciousness.

+If you would like a holiday/Christmas card, inbox me your address! :D
