I meant to make way more posts for

3weeks4dreamwidth but I suppose today is as good a day as any to start.

It is so hard to find fanvids these days! And they are my number one source of fic inspiration! The Youtube search function is literally useless, and Vimeo never really took off? Or if it did, I don't know how to search the tags. It seems like a lot of fan edits/fanvids are posted on TikTok. I don't have tiktok but I can still watch vids on desktop (mobile doesn't seem to work). I can't search tags either way but at least people seem to be reposting their edits/links to their edits on Tumblr? If you know of any tips for searching for fanvids/fan edits, I'd love to hear them.

I did send out a request for Harry Crosby/Rosie Rosenthal (Masters of the Air) vid recs on Tumblr, and someone responded! They have some really fun fan edits on Tik Tok and these two are my favorites:

Close to You - I love when a vid has opening dialogue to set the tone. They're fun! They're flirty! They both like music! It might be a little fast for my usual taste but it's still a delight.

I'm deep in the ship feels tonight, oof. So here's a list of my favorite Buck Cleven + Bucky Egan fanvids/edits (seems like we're calling shorter vids edits now?) so that I can find them again.

You Told the Drunks I Knew Karate; Shane &/Ryan, Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher
Why do I do the dumbest things for you? This lyric is EVERYTHING. I cannot stop smiling while I watch this vid. There's so much about their dynamic that is perfectly captured, namely how much fun they have together. Also there's plenty of Ryan facing his fears and Shane just being a goofball, which I can always appreciate.

Trust+Fall; Romeo+Juliet (1996)
Parachute by Ingrid Michaelson as a tragedy?? It works so well! The irony of Romeo being Juliet's parachute! The ending gave me chills. There was so much joy contrasted with violence and sheer stubborness in an impressive way; I felt like this was a fresh take on one of my favorite films!

I'm That Queer; Janelle Monae
I don't know that much about Janelle Monae, but this vid seamlessly weaves together their alter-egos/personas and it feels like an immersive music video and a fight against authoritarianism at the same time! I love how high-energy it is.

We Can Be Anything; Evelyn & Joy, Everything Everywhere All At Once
The editing is so sharp and elegant! The changes in tempo are handled so well, and I loved the uplifting ending. This is a wonderful retelling of the film imo.

Didn't Come to Play; Women's 100m Sprinting
I know nothing about this sport, but that didn't matter because this vid mixed in a bunch of headlines and tweets and news captions to tell a whole story about these incredible women! It's just an absolutely delightful and uplifting watch.

I haven't seen this show yet but this is really inspiring and makes me want to watch the show immediately.

The beautiful pink hue of this gem made me think of the way American society associates pink with girls. Many people like to embrace gender norms through the use of this color, like with gender reveal parties and 'girly' clothes. I read this livescience article about how this trend really took off in the 1980s when mass marketing could convince you that you needed certain products to perpetuate gender norms. This mentalfloss article also posits a few theories related to the trend taking off in the 1980s - technology made it so that parents could find out the sex of their child in advance and buy specific clothing in preparation.

I've gone through various stages of hating the color pink (because of the gender norms associated with it). At the end of the day it's just a color. Femininity doesn't have to be just one homogeneous thing, and it certainly can't be captured just by one color. I'm still not a big pink fan but I don't have to hate it quite so much. I can hate on all of the companies that perpetuate strict gender-norms instead.

And it turns out there's a multifandom vid that exactly captures a feel-good mood around the color pink and celebrates femininity in many forms!

I had a blast at Escapade con. I attended mostly in-person panels, plus a couple virtual panels. Welcome to my new friends! *waves* I have other posts in the works about panels that were thought-provoking for me, but this post is all about the vids. I was not familiar with the Escapade Vid Show before the con, but I was certainly familiar with several of the vidders who had vids in the show. You can watch all the vids here. And here are my reccs!

Too Darn Hot (In the Heights) by sandalwoodbox: A fandom I know nothing about, but I'm pretty sure that's Lin-Manuel Miranda? Anyway, this song was perfect and as far as I'm concerned this is now a show/movie about enemies to lovers, lol.

Biloxi Parish (Starsky & Hutch) by Garrideb: Again, not my fandom, but the fanon history of Starsky & Hutch deserves props, and this song kicks ass. The strength of their partnership was really evident to me, and the juxtaposition of similar scenes ramped up the tension. The vid transitions in and out of action/fast moments and soft moments so well. Plus the mirroring of the beginning and the ending!!

Trouble (Word of Honor) by

aurumcalendula: This is a fandom I have never heard of and knew nothing about, but the vid is so engaging! I loved how the stage was set with the establishing shots, and then the costumes and the use of the color red were really breathtaking. I ship them! I immediately added the song to a playlist.

Hit Me With Your Best Shot (The Old Guard, Andy/Nile): also by

aurumcalendula: I had never heard this version of the song, but it works SO WELL. The pacing is just incredible considering The Old Guard is very much an action film, and this became such an evocative look at violence and power. I felt like Andy and Nile were very lived-in by the end, if that makes sense.

I went to Francesca Coppa's virtual panel on her book Vidding: A History, which you can read for free online. I was humbled to learn about the rich fandom history of vidding, and how difficult it was to make vids at first! Vids/vidding seem to be a lot more mainstream these days on youtube - although I see mostly compilations and action-based remixes. I'm glad there was a "state of vidding" panel too. There were some interesting notes that came out of that session, including how we might define "vidding" differently than we used to. I think creating different categories might help, like crack or scene compilations/comparisons across different fandoms, versus things like vid essays/meta or ship-based vids.

We also started putting together a playlist on youtube of fanvids that have really stuck out to people here.

P.S. I can't wait to check out the Roswell NM Vids once I watch more of the show. Hello new fandom! <3

Challenge #10: In your own space, rec a fanwork (fic, art, vid, playlist, anything!) you did not create.

Fanvids bring me a lot of joy, so I'm recommending some of my recent favorites.

•A Bond That Lasts Forever - Shane & Ryan by psychicbergara. THIS! It's so sentimental and has so many iconic quotes and it really captures so much of what is wonderful about their relationship.

•With Arms Wide Open, a Chimney vid by tarlosbuddie. This showcases how Chim (and Maddie) transitioned into parents. I love the way the vid shows Chim's soft side, and how great he is as a dad.

•Traitor, a post Stiles/Malia angsty vid by Sharon. Oof, the show never really got to dive in to the ways that Malia might have been hurt by Stiles, and I like that this vid just lets her be angry and sad for a moment.

•I'm Still Here, a Hen Wilson character study by oneawkwardcookie. Hen!! This vid is so inspiring and shows why Hen is one of the best characters on the show.

•Clumsy, a Buck/Eddie feel-good vid also by oneawkwardcookie. This one has all the shippy goodness and it never fails to make me smile.

Apparently it's Supernatural feels hour because I saw this music video and I want to gush about it. The comparison between the Impala and the Bunker is so well-done. Maybe I'm being an old SPN fan but the implication is clear - the bunker is new and shiny and has so many great things, but the Impala was truly their first home. This is a great example of a fan essay through video, plus it mixes old and new scenes very well.

⭐Baby Outlaw | Charlize Theron Multifandom Appreciation | I realized I should be more of a Theron fan, because this vid is badass!

⭐Whatta Man | George of the Jungle (live action) Appreciation Vid | This is the perfect song for this film! This vid is totally heartwarming and fun.

⭐Vampire Heart | SPN, Benny/Dean | Oof, right in the feels! This reminded me of how tragic Benny and Dean are - maybe that's why I shipped them in the first place.

The request for a psychological evaluation for this fandom gave me the opportunity to put some of my work research to use. I'm not a psych, but I did go through the juvenile sex offender assessment. I love when fandom presents opportunities to incorporate RL things to existing characters.

Spring Equinox vidders have been revealed. And there were so many great vids.

⭐Let the Games Begin, a really happy, fun video about She's the Man. This reminded me of how much I loved this movie ♥

⭐Adore You, a Geralt/Jaskier shipping video, featuring pining Jaskier and some really lovely editing. This video serves as a great summary of this OTP. This was a clever take on the overall "games" theme.

⭐Balloons, a video about Community and the paintball wars! I really like the build up of this vid and the use of the song.

⭐Playing to Win, a super high energy Community video about the paintball wars, too. I'm loving the Community resurgence.

The Medici cast did a zoom conference call and took questions from the audience. I missed it live but the HD recording is on youtube. My biggest take away was that Bradley James and Daniel Sharman LOVE to make fun of each other. Daniel calls him Bradders. Their flirty, silly energy is very cute. They also made fun of Sarah Parish because apparently she has a huge house, and I thought that was very millennial of them, lol. Bradley said he cried after his last scene wrapped and he was trying to cry on the down-low, but the Director announced that it was his last scene so he definitely bawled in front of a bunch of strangers. What a precious soul. Also, hate to be too thirsty on main but Bradley's tight blue t-shirt was an excellent choice. Anyway, time to watch season three.

Here are my favorites:

•A Gorgeous Vid Moment - A joyful Queer Eye (2018) compilation set to YMCA that had me in tears. The focus is on all of the people the Fab 5 have helped, and I was reminded of some of the big emotional moments of the show.

•RAISE (a little hell) - A Canadian curling vid, you say? About a team and a sport I know nothing about yet? HELL YES. This video captures a wonderful underdog sports story in a really triumphant way. I'm SO proud of this team of women.

•Little Lion Leo - Hooray for a Humans video about Leo! I really loved the way the maker highlighted all the different relationships that are important to Leo, and used voice overs to highlight his identity struggle. This video is a great recap of Leo's growth.

I love this challenge! It's a chance for me to highlight a fandom medium that doesn't often get a lot of attention: fanvideos!
