I watch The Voice mostly because it's fun and easy and relaxes me. But Bailey Rae and John Legend teaming up during Season 19 really felt special to me. Bailey Rae was 18 at the time, hailing from Roberta, Oklahoma. By the time it was her turn to audition, Blake Shelton's team was completely full. He is stereotypically the "country" coach, so I didn't expect her to be picked by anyone. She really crushed it with an older song, and John Legend was the only one to turn for her.

She became the very first country singer on John's team - he's stereotypically the R&B and soul coach. It was a totally flipped script, and I was surprised. But then as the season went on, John proved it wasn't just a move to break tradition. He was always so genuine with her and encouraged her classic country sound, and they seemed to genuinely warm up to each other. I respected the hell out of John Legend after, for reaching out to someone he did not have to pick. And then Bailey Rae made it all the way to the top 9! I'm probably reading too much into it, but with the state of the country right now, the metaphor seemed clear to me. A Midwestern woman from an ultra-conservative state forming a truly accepting and mutually beneficial relationship with a hollywood/famous liberal on live TV? I loved everything about it. Also, I totally loved her voice. These are my two favorite performances of hers:

She's releasing her own music now!

The Jonas Brothers dropped two new songs. One of them is a dance track for the club and it's fun but nothing special. The other is this one! Definitely reminds me of one of the songs on their very first album called 6 minutes, except it's like there has been a major glow up. The song has got sweet, domestic established relationship vibes that make me happy.

Speaking of music, all of the remaining women were eliminated from the top 5 on The Voice with the exception of Toneisha during the instant save. Maybe a coincidence, but still sad. I was most disappointed that Allegra Miles won't be moving on! Her last performance was so powerful and made me cry. There's just something so great about hearing a song sung by a woman after only hearing it sung by a man (when it's not a love song). Hands down my favorite performance of the night.

Seeing The Voice performances go on even in these conditions really lifts my spirits. I love how the coaches have made themselves accessible and still seem to be putting in the time to connect with everyone across State lines. It's also a weird insight into American living rooms. There has already been commentary on the wide gap in American social classes, but the performers mostly seem to be solidly upper middle class. Access to travel, instruments, time - all of that plays into becoming good at something. It would be nice to see shows like this reach for other people who don't necessarily have the access. With the exception of maybe Toneisha Harris (hard to tell, but she's the only one whose backgrounds have been really plain). Speaking of which, Toneisha definitely deserved to move to the finals. I never got into singing competition shows before, but I started watching The Voice because it came up on Hulu and also the Jonas Brothers were in it :P It's become my feel good show because I really love how positive and encouraging the coaches are. I especially appreciate how seriously Nick and Kelly take their coaching: it seems like they really want to help people. I love how enthusiastic Kelly gets, and how Nick takes meticulous notes.

The next stage of the competition was supposed to be the live performances, but obviously they can't go back to the studio. Blake Shelton has said they will be running the live part of the competition via video conferencing. I wonder how that will change the vibe of the show!

Below the cut are my favorite duets from the "knockout" round, where the coaches pair up the singers they have chosen for their team and then choose a song for them to sing. It was really great to see people play off each other! Videos under here )
