I received three lovely gifts over at [community profile] fandomgiftbasket!!

01. A very fun and thoughtful Feyd-Rautha fanmix (I especially liked the inclusion of Paint it Black and Gasoline).
02. A fic about Ronan and Adam taking a day off (The Raven Cycle) from [personal profile] cornerofmadness. It's so domestic and sweet!
03. A fic featuring Liz realizing that Kyle is into both her and Max (Roswell New Mexico) from [personal profile] scintilla10. This so so sexy and the character voices are so well done!

I wrote 4 gifts:

Teen Wolf, Stiles/Allison, Sneaking Around (rated T)
The Expanse, Amos/Prax, This Life With You (rated T)
Hades (game), Hades/Zagreus, Whore of the Underworld (rated E)
Regular Show, Mordecai/Margaret, Ice Cream (rated T)

Four more songs for the song challenge )

For the Liz Ortecho Week theme Power/Destruction, and the [community profile] lands_of_magic fanmix challenge. This mix is about Liz's journey from Roswell to L.A. at the end of season two/beginning of season three + when she starts plotting to secretly release her research out into the world. Cover images are from 3x04.

My first experience contributing to a fandom 'zine did not go very well... First the mods dropped off the face of the Earth and new mods took over, then they switched to a mostly tarot card project (seems like there are way too many fandom tarot decks available anyway?), and then they couldn't get enough artists to finish the deck, and THEN there weren't enough pre orders :( The worst part is I wrote my fic about Allison coming back from the dead because of the Oni way before the movie trailer came out! Obviously I didn't do the zine to make any money but it would have been so cool to see it in print.

At any rate, here's the zine link. Warning for gore/blood/violence. I think some of the art is so fabulous!

[personal profile] muccamukk I actually started this playlist for you, I think it was in response to a fandom trees request. Finally had the time to put in a bit more research, and decided to just make it about any pairing/character for the lands of magic challenge.

All of these songs are from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s.

My favorite female character on Supernatural is Rowena MacLeod! I wrote some meta about why she's my favorite for the [community profile] lands_of_magic challenge: character study.

Three Reasons I love Rowena )

I'm not done reading the entire [community profile] ficinabox collection, but I have to recc these two fanmixes. I love the formatting of each, and the playlists themselves feel so tender and epic and timeless (and full of songs I had never heard of before).

This is a mix to commemorate Brad’s time in Iraq, when he purposefully let his eyes linger on Nate, just to see what would happen.

(my playlist, saved from 8tracks)

Founder and CEO David Porter wrote a blog post explaining, in detail, the life and death of 8tracks. This may be the first time I watched a tech company fail when I really, really wanted it to succeed.

8tracks has always seemed like a thoughtful little corner of the internet where I could find playlists put together by real people and listen to "mood-based" playlists, as 8tracks called them. The site was also a huge fandom space for awhile, mostly because of the easy tagging features. It was my go-to spot to find fanmixes, cover art, and pithy ship or fandom commentary. I've been a member since January 2014, and I became a plus member as soon as they offered that option. 8tracks really filled a niche for me - maybe because I remembered the not-so-distance past when my friends and I used to exchange homemade CD playlists. I would be delighted to hear new music in my car and not know what was coming next. The magic of 8tracks was that someone else made a playlist based on my interests or fandoms, and it regularly turned out that I actually liked the songs! Spotify doesn't have that kind of magic for me.

My main complaint was that the mobile app was not useful and not compatible with driving apps. You also couldn't look up individual songs to play, but I didn't really mind that. David Porter points out that they were aware of these issues, but were spending their money and energy trying to keep up with licensing and operating a music site.

I think tumblr is really the only place to go for fanmixes now (since Spotify is completely overwhelming in terms of searching for and finding actual playlists made by real people).

One of David Porter's parting comments really rings true for me:

We — the remaining team at 8tracks — all think it’s still to hard to find playlists with a “soul behind the music.” User programmed playlists on Spotify and YouTube are great, but they remain relatively hard to navigate to find the best ones for a particular person’s taste, time or place. And there’s not (as yet) an ecosystem to allow curators to flourish. There’s still work to be done.
