muccamukk I actually started this playlist for you, I think it was in response to a fandom trees request. Finally had the time to put in a bit more research, and decided to just make it about any pairing/character for the lands of magic challenge.

02. How ‘Bout that Jive feat. Tiny Davis – International Sweethearts of Rhythm

Commanding audiences across the world in her suit jacket and vest (a get-up, incidentally, not too far off from Ma Rainey’s), Tiny (an out lesbian) led the Sweethearts on their first ever USO tour, where they performed for U.S. military personnel throughout France and Germany. (source)

03. Je cherche Un Milliardaire (I'm Looking For A Millionaire) – Coccinelle (Jacques Dufresnoy)

04. Garbage Man – Harlem Hamfats

In the 1936 song Garbage Man, by the Harlem Hamfats, after the first 45 seconds the rest of the song is instrumental, but they do get down to business right away. They talk about sticking out your can, or butt, for the garbage man. (source)

05. Green Carnation – Noel Coward

The title of the song is filched from Oscar Wilde, the gay playwright known for habitually wearing a green carnation in his lapel. In time, the green carnation was adopted by gay men throughout Europe to flag their sexuality to others. In an era where queerness was criminalized in England, the green carnation was a badge of honor, a lighthouse, a path to finding family despite the forced and looming silence. (source)

It's crazy because I've heard Tutti Frutti played so many times and I just assumed words were used differently then and that there was no connection to gay slang. Now I like it a whole lot more than I did before.
