For the [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge I'd like to do four meta posts this month and cross-post them to comms and/or Tumblr. This one is about consent in the first two episodes of Heated Rivalry!

In our current internet culture, it seems like there is plenty of purity wank to go around. I've seen posts (and fic, frankly) that focus on all characters involved having a conversation where they say yes throughout, and discuss all sex acts before doing them, and constantly ask if the light is green, etc. And we've also seen fandom events that ban certain tropes/kinks for being too problematic. Fic has leaned on being morally pure instead of embracing the fact that sex isn't always perfect in real life. And yet Heated Rivalry does NOT appease any of those people. Instead, it embraces sex that is spontaneous and has a definite D/s dynamic.

In their first actual sexual encounter in Shane's hotel room, Shane has already gone down on Ilya and they've kissed. But when Ilya asks what Shane wants to do, he says he doesn't know. Then Ilya pretends he's going to leave just to get a rise out of Shane, and then he sucks his dick. On paper, that might not seem like the nicest move on Ilya's part. But the show clearly depicts Shane's point of view here - we know that Shane feels shame about his desires and has repressed this part of himself. We also know that he is VERY into what Ilya is doing to him, and is happy to let Ilya take the reins. This is because we can see Shane participating, and moaning, and being eager to please Ilya, and even gets off himself. The important thing about this depiction (beyond being hot) is that Ilya can ALSO see what we see. Ilya is focused on Shane, and seeing these small cues, and that's why he can continue to push Shane's buttons and get him off.

A different time, Ilya tells Shane to get on his knees. Shane immediately complies. There's no discussion about this particular demand, or even about oral sex. But Ilya feels Shane's desire in their kiss, and he decides to try it to see how Shane will react. We as viewers also see how keyed up Shane is, how much he wants Ilya, and those visual cues provide context for Ilya's demand. It's still only a guess as to Shane's desires on Ilya's part, though. Ilya's guess turns out to be correct when Shane is eager to do as he is told in this sexual context.

On the bed, Ilya tells Shane to turn on his stomach. We can see through Shane's body language that he's tense and probably nervous when Ilya touches his butt. Ilya picks up on that too, and asks if he's ever done something with his ass. Ilya says he wants to fuck him, and eventually Shane is able to mention his dildo. But Shane's discomfort in that moment prompts Ilya not to push Shane into anal sex, and they do something else instead. They then make a plan to fuck later on. It's not a 'no', it's a 'maybe later.' Without even having to have a full discussion about it, they both have communicated in this intimate way about something that Shane wants to do in the future.

Then, during the awards ceremony, when they're both up on the balcony in tuxedos - Ilya is upset about going home for the summer, and maybe not as focused on Shane as he normally is. He kisses him, acting on the desire he feels coming from Shane and his own desire. But this is the first time Shane actually pushes him away. He pushes him and tells him to stop and it takes a few seconds for Ilya to actually stop. To realize Shane isn't just being coy or acting unsure, he's actually anxious and angry. This is the first time Ilya has real reason to doubt the physical aspect of their relationship, and I think that eats at him. BUT at least he knows that Shane will stand up to Ilya and tell him to stop if he wants him to stop.

Of course they don't discuss it, and then Ilya starts sexting and pursuing Shane even more overtly than before. I think that's an interesting choice because if we weren't seeing Shane's point of view, we might find that behavior to be sleezy or annoying. The viewer can see that Shane is equal parts charmed and turned on, but he's fighting his own shame and his perceived need to keep his private life completely secret. I think this part only works because Ilya has seen before that Shane gets nervous/anxious about gay sex, but that hasn't meant 'no' in the past. He's also learned that if Shane truly feels uncomfortable, he'll stop him, and maybe that's what empowers Ilya.

And then we get to the scene in Shane's apartment, the first time they have anal sex.

Shane: You're such an asshole.

Ilya: I think maybe you like it.

By now, we the viewers know this is a big deal for Shane. He's waited a long time for this, he's wanted it, but lots of things have gotten in the way. Ilya also knows this is a big deal for Shane. And he's familiar enough with Shane in a sexual context to know that sometimes, he can't fully express his wants. As a result, we see Ilya act differently then he has any other time before. He checks in at least three times, asking if Shane is okay. He stays focused on him, and what's going to get him off, and takes a few breaks/pauses before ultimately flipping him over and pounding him into the mattress. We the viewer (and Ilya) see all the ways that Shane is consenting, like answering in the affirmative, nodding, moaning, saying oh god in a reverent way, etc. Once they're really fucking, Ilya puts his hand on Shane's head, holds him down, gives it to him hard. He's guessing that Shane is going to like it, and again Ilya has guessed correctly because Shane comes hands-free (which then makes Ilya come. HOT).

We know that danger gets Ilya going. There is danger in pushing Shane's buttons and seeing how he reacts, but what if he pushed too far? Ilya's focus on Shane allows him to pick up on small cues, and to make educated guesses, rather than just blindly grab for what he wants. But that doesn't mean Ilya has to ask Shane about every single thing and create a checklist with him to engage in D/s play. And that also means Shane gets to enjoy the spontaneity of it and learn more about what it is that he actually likes. Consent is obvious in the show not because the characters follow strict rules, but because they continually trust each other's good judgement.

OF COURSE Sex scenes can just be enjoyed for what they are, and shouldn't have to be justified. But I'm really grateful the show did not shy away from depicting sex in this way. It's essential for us to see the entire sex scene to understand Shane and Ilya's points of view in these intimate moments.

The TLDR; is that consent is not always black and white and requires good judgment.
