Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fanart/fanvids/fancrafts/podfics/fics/other kinds of fanworks have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

Theme: Working together, outsider POV

Summary: the flagship may not be all it's cracked up to be

Reccer's Notes: Have you ever wondered what it's like to work with a commanding officer who has zero judgment when it comes to the captain and who does crazy shit like almost kill him while under the influence of Vulcan mating hormones? Or how about working under a captain who has zero judgment when it comes to his first, and is always doing shit like risking his life and the ship to save his first's life? This short song captures what that must be like. It's the little things like trying to get your damn performance review submitted to Starfleet.

I'm not super into filk, but this one is well-written, with some fun rhymes and nice progression from beginning to end. It'll put a smile on your face.

Challenge #3

Journaling prompt: What are your favorite summer-associated foods?
I have to go with ice cream. I have a total sweet tooth, and I love when the weather warms up. My favorite flavor is coffee but I'm also a sucker for a chocolate/vanilla soft serve swirl. As a kid, I used to love all the popsicles and the ice pops and the orange cream bars. Also loved ice cream sandwiches and certain Sara Lee products that they don't make anymore.

Pomegranates are another favorite food that I think of when summer hits. When we moved into our house as a kid, there was a bush in the backyard and over the years, it has grown into a bigger tree. I loved when the pomegranates and ripened, which did happen in summer. Some years, they were good and others not so much. A couple of years ago, we got a lot of amazing, sweet fruit. Last year was a little hit or miss, but my cousins' kids had fun picking them and enjoying what they picked, even if one or two weren't totally ripe yet. I think of watermelon too. I have a ton of memories of enjoying it as the weather warmed up. I'm not a fan of mangoes myself but it is also a very summer fruit. My mom especially loves mangoes and is happy when the season hits and always is ready to make the most of it.

I'm sure there are more, but that is really the ones I can think of off the top of my head. :D

Creative prompt: Draw art of or make graphics of summer foods, or post your favorite summer recipes.

I got a little too into this and made 32 icons of ice cream and various fruits (cherries, strawberries, pomegranates, mangoes, and watermelon). Anyone is welcome to save/use them! :)

Thank you to all our pinch hitters. <3 Remember that anyone who isn't signed up but is only pinch hitting can leave prompts at our treats for pinch hitters post! This is a great place to look if you're interested in creating treats.

Ideally, these would be due 18 July at 23:59 US Eastern time, one day before our planned reveals date. However, it's possible I'll have to delay the collection opening to make sure all participants are covered, so if you know you can take one of these pinch hits but will need longer than the 18th, please let me know, and we can discuss.

A delay looks likely at this time, and I'll make an announcement about that tomorrow.

If you can claim one of these, please comment with your AO3 name and the number of the pinch hit you want. All comments are screened.

I'd heard of Melissa Scott's Astreiant novels, but hadn't gotten to them until recently. I like the combination of plotty mysteries and slowburn romance. It reminded me of Swordspoint at times, although with more magic and a matriarchal-ish society (it was interesting to notice 'she' being used as default pronoun for an unknown person the way 'he' sometimes used to be, iirc). I'm very fond of the main characters, but I would really like to read something like this with a f/f main couple. More on specific books (I have two more left in the series to read) below.

Challenge 266:
A WALK IN THE PARK
What could be easier? It’s just a nice stroll through the park. A relaxing summer evening, a crisp fall morning, an afternoon with the kids…

But maybe it’s not quite that simple. Maybe the weather’s out to get your characters – a relaxing walk is interrupted by rain, snow, or lightning. Maybe the park has been overrun with wild geese, and now you’re facing a gauntlet of angry birds just to get to the picnic tables. Or maybe no matter how hard your characters try, getting an afternoon off from saving the world just isn’t happening.

So how does their walk in the park go? Do they get to enjoy it?

Write a story about a walk in the park.

BONUS GOAL: Birdwatching

If your submission features birds (of any species), it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, July 14 at 9:00PM EST.
• Post submissions as new entries using the template in the profile

I am not usually an icon maker, but I saw this challenge and couldn't resist. My favorite magical creature is Feo Ul, a pixie from the Final Fantasy XIV MMORPG. Pixies are playful and love to play tricks on non-pixie races. Feo Ul is a rare pixie who works in conjunction with the player character, and eventually Feo Ul becomes Titania (King of the Pixies).

Journaling: The romance of summer! What do you love? Write about anything you feel sentimental about or that gets your heart pumping.

I love that still, quiet moment after you turn off the car or the TV or whatever and you just sit for a moment. It's like a peaceful reset or transition from driving home or finishing dinner (which is when we mostly watch TV). I always like to just sit in that moment.

I love Glassworks: I. Opening by Philip Glass. It gives me that same feeling of peace that those moments of quiet do, an opportunity to center myself.

I love our backyard, even now that we are surrounded by houses. I love the trees, the deck, the garden, the birds, all of the bugs (except the mosquitos), the lizards, the sunflowers that sprang up of their own volition, the pergola ... just all of it. I love having an outdoor space.

Journaling prompt: What are your favorite summer-associated foods?

Raspas. When I was a kid we would always get raspas and I loved them. They are a bit too sweet for me now, but I love the idea of them and the memory.

Mangonadas. Seriously. They are the best, especially when it's hot out. Those are some of my favorite flavors.Chamoy is delicious!

Watermelon. Once when I was small, my parents borrowed our grandparents' camper and we went to a park in Arkansas. My dad bought a watermelon and he tethered it in a net in the river which was ice cold. That night we cut it up and ate it. The platonic ideal of watermelon! I think about it a lot.You can put one in an ice chest in icy water and it comes close.

Today is mostly sunny, humid, and hot.  Yesterday it rained for half the day and into the night.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.  They've drained half the thistle feeder but I still need to refill that one.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/9/25 -- I filled the thistle feeder.

I've seen a male cardinal and a fox squirrel.

EDIT 7/9/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 7/9/25 -- I sprayed weedkiller on poison ivy around the yard.

EDIT 7/9/25 -- I potted up two apricot seeds.

Tunnel of Love

Journaling: The romance of summer! What do you love? Write about anything you feel sentimental about or that gets your heart pumping.

Since this is what I did most of last Sunday, I'll talk about how much I love baking. I love to bake. It's something I've done since I was a child. My mom was the one who taught me, with box mixes and canned frosting to begin with, before I moved on to making cakes from scratch. I remember taking a whole tray of cupcakes for a surprise party our class planned for our teacher in elementary school (okay, it was the girls. I vaguely remember us thinking the boys couldn't be trusted to keep their mouth shut so we left them out. I think we were, like, 10 or 11?). I also remember making birthday cakes and father's day cakes for my dad. I remember taking things for all sorts of class parties throughout the years really. When we had a project in elementary school on teaching the class "how to do something", I chose baking a cake and I remember switching from mix to wanting to do a scratch cake. My dad carefully measured out the ingredients in the morning before school so it would save me time. So much of my baking memories are tied to my family.

Baking is something that calms my mind. There's a precision to it that I appreciate. I'm someone who likes really exact instructions, which is why even though I have learned to like cooking, I do like baking more. You stick to a recipe and outside of mild variables, like the oven timing, it should come out right. And I like the results too! I have a sweet tooth, but I do like when people around me enjoy my baking. I am not great with taking compliments, but I like hearing them (who doesn't, right? lol)! I do like pretty things so it's been fun learning and practicing decorating as well.

People have made jokes about me starting a bakery in the past, and while there are many reasons I wouldn't, I do just like some thing just being an enjoyable hobby. And I will keep doing it. It's a nice way to spend an evening or a weekend. Doing what I love and sometimes, for the people I love. Because they're the reason I learned to do this in the first place. :)

My favourite sumer food probably sounds very boring, but if one takes care to use the best quality possible, it’s delicious. Boiled white fish with new potatoes, clarified butter and chopped hard-boiled eggs. When I was a child the fish we used was northern pike, which my father or grandfather had just caught, but nowadays we usually buy fresh cod. The new potatoes come from the garden. The clarified butter must be real butter, and organic eggs taste the best. One can mix the butter and the eggs, but we prefer to keep them separate, so each can take after taste.

Also, for me this tastes best eaten outside the summer house, on dishes called “Grön berså” (green bower) by the Swedish designer Stig Lindberg in 1960.

Challenge #2: Tunnel of Love
Journaling: The romance of summer! What do you love? Write about anything you feel sentimental about or that gets your heart pumping.

I've never been great at being sentimental about things - complicated depressing family history reasons that eventually added up to "I'm bad at openly expressing how much I love something". But I've been working on that, so tricky as it might be, I'm going to talk about something summer-associated that I love that I don't talk about much: hummingbirds.

They're so pretty. I've had a hummingbird feeder for years, and every spring they show up at my window to see where it is. In the summer, I'll sit out on the porch with a book and just hang out while the hummingbirds hold a tiny little territory war over the feeder. I'm sure it's all very serious and dramatic, if you're a hummingbird. If you're me, it's just adorable, and kind of noisy.

Two years ago I left the back door open, and a hummingbird decided to make herself at home in my apartment. This would be an adorable moment of "chosen by the birds", except that I also have a cat, so it was a very exciting twenty minutes of trying to very gently remove a small angry bird. Worth it, though. They're precious.

(Note to self: refill feeder tonight.)

No creative-prompt fill from me this challenge, because poetry and I have a very bad relationship. Alas! In apology, I found a picture of a hummingbird (not mine, I can't photograph birds that move that fast):
